| Well inside the National Park reservation, the main characteristic of the weather in El Chaltén is its unpredictability, with quickly changing conditions that might make you experience all the four seasons on a single day. Most of the walks cut across the forest, which being surrounded by hills offers an additional protection.
The solar days are longer from October to April, with a maximum of 18 hours in December and a minimum of 8 hours in June/July.
The highest average temperature from October to April is around 15º C and the lowest is around –1º C.
The sun is a key influence on the temperature, and on sunny days the thermal sensation will be much higher than the thermometer indicates.
The wind is particularly hard in summer, but winter is not windy at all.
The best time of the year to visit El Chaltén is from September to April.

Most of the activities are carried out in the National Park taking up several hours outdoors, so it is essential to wear the right clothes and shoes.
We recommend sport clothes, preferably loose (like leggings), sweaters and waterproof jackets. When trekking or walking through the National Park, you have to dress “like an onion”, meaning a light inner layer (polyester or something of the sort), a second layer of some artificial fiber (a sweater, a pullover, etc.) and a third and outer water and windproof layer.
The ideal footwear is that specific for trekking or with slip-resistant soles, with good grip and, as importantly, comfortable. Always keep in mind that once that you have got there, you must return.
If you are going camping or undertake a long walk always take spare shoes, socks and clothes, giving preference to synthetic fibers, because they are warmer and keep your body dry.
Sun cream and sunglasses, and mosquito repellent (often a must), and flashlight with spare batteries just in case it gets dark and you can not find your path back.
