Declared as “National Capital of Trekking” by the National Tourism Department, El Chalten welcomes every year thousands of trekking and rock climbing lovers from all over the world, who turn this little town into some kind of “Patagonian Mecca” of rock climbing.
Located at the foot of the Andes, in the south-western end of Santa Cruz province, numberless paths are born in El Chalten, which go through forests and powerful rivers, and lead to beautiful sights of blue glaciers, emerald-green lakes and spectacular panoramic views of the mountain range of the Torre, Eléctrico, Saint Exupery, and Poincenot hills, crowned by the imposing Mount Fitz Roy (3400 metres high), one of the biggest stone walls of the world and unarguably the most beautiful, due to the landscape surrounding it. |
